Updated Statistics on Convictions for Corruption Offences (2016 Data Added)

  • In cases of criminal offenses related to public sector corruption, in which the first-instance judgments were made in 2016, the total number of tried persons decreased in comparison with 2015 when it was record high. At least 175 persons were tried in 2016 and 216 persons were tried in 2015.
  • At least 165 persons were convicted in 2016 compared to 202 in 2015.
  • Criminal cases for bribe giving to the road police constituted the largest share of all the cases (at least 108 of 152). Such trait persists for several years.
  • The trend of gradually increasing number of convicted public officials continued in 2016. At least 34 public officials were convicted in the first instance in 2016. The largest number - 96 convicted officials - was in 2005. The smallest number - 23 - in 2014.
  • In 2016 among the convicted public officials were 11 State Police officers, 6 customs officers, 3 border guards, one judge, one manager of a municipal hospital, etc.
  • Five of the officials (police officers and an official of an education institution) received sentences of real prison terms.
  • The largest bribe in the cases tried in 2016 was LVL 50,000 (approx. EUR 70,000), which was offered to an official of the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau. An appeal is pending in the case regarding the first-instance judgment.
